The Shine Centre

Description of Organisation:The Shine Centre was established in 2000 in response to an identified need for an early intervention programme for children who needed support in language and literacy attainment. Using Thirty-six Shine literacy games developed by speech and language experts delivers literacy support to children in Grades Two and Three in school-based centres using trained volunteers and evidence-based methodology and resources. Those children who do not make satisfactory progress through the literacy support programme are referred to volunteer psychologists for an assessment so that recommendations can be made to help the child further.

The Smile Foundation

Description of Organisation: As part of its holistic service delivery, the Smile Foundation’s primary mission is the provision of reconstructive plastic surgery for children, mainly from vulnerable and previously disadvantaged communities, who have facial anomalies. Sophiatown Community Psychological Services

Description of Organisation: Sophiatown Community Psychological Services is a community mental health organisation which strives to provide culturally and socially-appropriate psycho-social support to the economically disadvantaged; to build and strengthen support networks for vulnerable individuals; and to continuously work with others towards social justice and change. It has two main centres. 

  1. Westdene: counsellors/therapists/social workers serve Zamimipilo, Joe Slovo, Pennyville, Riverlea, Noordgesig and Mzimhlophe as well as providing a full time service from the Westdene office for referrals from community structures, hospitals, clinics, and universities. The focus of this service is primarily on HIV/Aids, bereavement, and caregiving.
  2. Bertrams centre serves the inner city migrant and refugee communities with a particular focus on the trauma of war, forced displacement, and xenophobia
